2020 GSK IMPACT Awards: Shantona Women's and Family Centre
Shantona works across a diverse range of communities in Leeds supporting women to be more independent. It works with those who have experienced domestic abuse, forced marriage, childhood sexual exploitation or harmful cultural practices, helping them to escape abusive situations. It trains healthcare professionals to identify and help people who may be at risk, running sessions to encourage healthy relationships and behaviours.

'Shantona provides safe spaces for people who desperately need them, helping women who, despite the taboo, escape abusive situations and access health and welfare services. We were impressed by its ability to engage with communities that are often ignored, working across cultural boundaries and serving a diverse community. It is a lifeline for many women and children living in some of the most disadvantaged areas, reaching out to people who might otherwise suffer in silence.'
