2020 GSK IMPACT Awards: Headway East London

Acquired brain injury is the leading cause of death and disability in young adults in the UK. Headway East London supports survivors to cope with the practical and emotional consequences of brain injury through a range of specialist services within a community setting. People engaged in these services become ‘members’ and share responsibility for the charity’s ongoing work.

'We were inspired by Headway East London’s collaborative approach where staff work in equal partnership with brain injury survivors to develop and deliver a wide range of support services. The charity’s staff and members are there for brain injury survivors right from the hospital ward and have built an incredible sense of community. Many survivors helped by the charity go on to become mentors and help others, building a cycle of support. It regularly seeks feedback from its members who attest to the value of its work and the positive impact the charity has had on their lives.'
