New Citizens’ Gateway works to reduce health inequalities and social exclusion amongst refugees by providing support on a wide range of issues including health, housing, immigration and benefits through a holistic model of support. It offers tailored counselling and psychological support services in nine community languages as well as information and advice to enable asylum seekers and refugees to navigate the health care system, including registering with a GP.
Judges' comments
New Citizens' Gateway sees on a daily basis how the physical effects of war and torture and the stress of seeking asylum in a new country impacts on the ability of asylum seekers and refugees to rebuild their lives. Its staff work in an incredibly challenging and often hostile
environment to support some of the most vulnerable people in society, including those who are destitute with no recourse to public funds. New Citizens' Gateway’s holistic model provides a ‘one stop shop’ of support on a wide range of issues including health, housing,
immigration and benefits, alongside counselling and psychological services. The charity is a key provider of services and has expanded quickly to meet dramatically rising demand.
