Population health is becoming ever more important, and organisations and leaders working in health and care systems across the UK are increasingly working together with their local communities to improve health and tackle health inequalities. Improving population health can happen in many ways and settings: at a team or service level, at a neighbourhood, partnership or network level (for example, integrated care systems or primary care networks), or at a local, regional or national level.
Given the complex nature of this work, it can be challenging to make progress. This programme will support you to work and lead strategically with partners from across the health and care system to improve the health of your local population. It will also help you to develop skills, knowledge and confidence in leading population health work.
Completion of the Leadership for Population Health programme is equivalent to 38 CPD points.
Limited offer: For the Leadership for Population Health cohort in Jan 2025, we are offering two bursary placements at 50% of the registration cost for participants from VCSE sector organisations. Find out more about the eligibility criteria*
Testimonials
Since its inception in 2019, this programme has supported more than 125 health and care leaders to develop their knowledge, skills and approach for improving population health.
'I gained so much from attending the Leadership for Population Health course at The King's Fund – knowledge of the topic, building networks outside of my existing public health ones and increased confidence as an ambassador and leader for population health. All this was achieved via a blend of face to face and virtual modules every two months, and by having facilitated ALS discussions and all this while most of us were undergoing organisational changes!
For me, I particularly benefited from being part of a mixed cohort so attending with delegates who are working nationally, regionally and at place level, we were all treated as leaders and equals.
We heard from a range of excellent guest speakers during our module with time to network and ask questions. I left feeling empowered and ready to continue the hard work.'
Public Health professional, Civil Servant
'I now am far more comfortable ‘leading chaos’ and managing the personalised care work with multiple stakeholders. I also have more energy around health inequalities which has resulted in the clinical commissioning group agreeing to fund diabetes care in GP surgeries based on need not population numbers.'
GP, CCG governing body
'It helped me take on a leadership role and work with a wide range of partners and the local community to develop a population approach to fuel poverty. I was able to build connections across communities, statutory organisations and government departments and take our approach to a more strategic level, influencing government strategy.'
National Commissioning Lead, Northern Ireland
What will I learn?
You will have the opportunity to work with other senior leaders in health and care and with experts, from The King’s Fund and further afield, to:
explore concepts of population health
identify local, regional and national opportunities for improving population health and approaches that work
understand your leadership role and how to operate effectively in a complex system using your unique assets and experiences
form a network of peers to work with during and after the programme.
Is this course for me?
This programme will be relevant if you are already working at a senior level (in any sector) and want to play a more active role in leading system improvement with a focus on population health. You might be a senior NHS clinician, public health professional, senior manager, commissioner, charity leader, senior leader in local government, leader of a community organisation or any partner in a leadership role who wants to better understand how to improve population health.
For each programme cohort, we aim to bring together a diverse range of individuals from across health and care, to recreate a ‘system in the room’ so that whatever your sector or background, you are likely to benefit and will have lots to contribute.
