More human, less machine: helping leaders to harness digital innovation and artificial intelligence
Today’s leaders face a ‘stuck’ paradox. Many feel the pull of AI’s potential to transform health and care, and the pressure to act now. But there's also a deep uncertainty about how to do so responsibly in an already stretched system.
Technology is rapidly advancing and new opportunities are surfacing every day. Yet a clear gap remains between strategic ambition and operational reality. Many leaders feel stuck – lacking the resources, capability or knowledge to make the right decisions, and without a clear map for leading teams compassionately and effectively through change.
Through our work on the human side of digital and AI transformation, we’re helping leaders to navigate this complexity with confidence – for themselves, their organisations and the people they serve.
About this project
Through dialogue with nearly 60 health and care leaders, we've identified a set of shared challenges:
Professional identity and accountability: deep concerns about the impact of AI on clinical roles, ownership of AI-related decisions, and what it means to preserve human value in health and care work.
Workforce transformation and equity: leaders facing significant workforce restructuring over the next decade, with particular concern about impact on job roles and communities already experiencing health inequalities.
Governance in uncertainty: the need for clear frameworks and ethical guidance while navigating rapidly evolving technology and fragmented IT systems.
Leading through change fatigue: helping teams engage with AI as genuine transformation rather than ‘another change programme’ being imposed from above.
We’re developing a new leadership capability offer focused on the human side of digital and AI-enabled change. By placing people at the centre of technological progress, we aim to drive positive change across the health and care sector, equipping leaders to meet the challenges of a rapidly evolving landscape.
What we’re doing
Our approach includes:
Taking a human-centred approach by starting with leaders, not technology. We are beginning by understanding leaders’ needs, what this change may mean for them personally and professionally, the challenges they are facing now, and the complexity they are likely to encounter over the next five years.
Convening organisations that are getting to grips with using AI to transform health and care in this country and internationally.
As part of our ‘policy into practice, practice into policy’ approach, we will work in partnership with people and providers to explore how AI is being used, across the workforce and for service delivery.
What next?
Look out for our further analysis and thinking around leadership and AI over the coming months.
