The King’s Fund quarterly monitoring report is based on an analysis of publicly available financial and performance data and an online survey of NHS trust and clinical commissioning group (CCG) finance leads.
The current survey had responses from 84 NHS trust finance directors (37 per cent response rate) and from 43 CCG finance leads representing 53 CCGs (27 per cent response rate). The surveys were carried out over October and November 2018.
The annual report and accounts for NHS mental health trusts were analysed to provide data on operating income and financial position. Where possible, adjustments were made to national trends to exclude spending by mental health trusts on physical health services, such as podiatry. Adjustments have also been made to account for known mergers and acquisitions of mental health trusts, which would otherwise affect analysis of income changes for individual providers. For these reasons the figures will differ from those in NHSI’s quarterly reports.
The King's Fund is an independent charity working to improve health and health care in England. We help to shape policy and practice through research and analysis; develop individuals, teams and organisations; promote understanding of the health and social care system; and bring people together to learn, share knowledge and debate. Our vision is that the best possible care is available to all.
