The patient-centred care project: evaluation report

The Patient-Centred Care Project, an experience-based co-design (EBCD) project, that aimed to improve the experience and quality of care for patients receiving treatment for breast cancer and lung cancer at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Supported by King's College London and The King's Fund, it was funded by Guy's & St Thomas' Charity.

This independent evaluation report, commissioned by the Fund, describes the process and impact of the EBCD project within breast cancer services (the first phase of the project). It presents a summary of the findings, including:

  • the process of evidence-based co-design

  • the key successes, outcomes and impact of the project

  • the lessons learned during the project

  • the solutions implemented in response to the project's findings.

What is experience-based co-design?

Experience-based co-design is an approach that enables staff and patients (or other service users) to co-design services and/or care pathways.

EBCD involves gathering experiences from patients and staff through in-depth interviewing, observations and group discussions; identifying emotionally significant points and assigning positive or negative feelings. A short edited film is shown to staff, conveying how patients experience the service. Then together, staff and patients identify areas for redesign, and ways to improve the service.
