The role of community pharmacy has expanded dramatically. In 2000, the government's NHS Plan set out its agenda for pharmacists to provide a wide range of extra services, such as dispensing repeat prescriptions without having to contact a GP. Pharmacists have been keen to take up the challenge, but many face low morale and long working hours.

This research summary asks how primary care trusts can shape and deliver services to help community pharmacists meet the challenge of this radical change.

Developing Community Pharmacy draws on a survey of 178 pharmacists in north-east London, looking at the services they provide and their views on the changes to their profession.
