Serious impact on patients when emergency services struggle - Channel 4 Dispatches

Commenting on the Channel 4 Dispatches investigation into ambulance delays, Siva Anandaciva, Director of Policy, Events and Partnerships at The King’s Fund, said:

‘Some of the scenes in tonight’s Dispatches are truly upsetting and show the serious consequences for NHS patients when emergency care services aren’t able to deliver the quality of care we need. Ambulance crews are often the first port of call for us when we need urgent treatment but this footage is an incredibly sobering reminder that we do not always receive timely NHS care when we need it most.

‘It demonstrates the intense pressures facing ambulance staff, with crews forced to make difficult decisions under challenging and often unsustainable conditions. Constantly having to reassess what qualifies as ‘urgent’ or ‘emergency’ care underscores just how serious the strain is on those staff striving to provide high quality treatment to patients.

‘The challenges ambulance staff face are symptomatic of wider NHS performance issues. When crews are stuck outside busy hospitals waiting to hand over patients safely, it’s not just a logistical issue, it reflects a system under strain where delays in one part ripple across the entire patient journey and mean longer waits when we call 999 for help.

‘To help address some of the challenges shown in tonight’s Dispatches, all parts of the NHS including local services, government and national bodies must prioritise openness when things go wrong and foster a culture of learning rather than blame. Building a truly responsive and resilient emergency care system means not only improving operational support across the entire patient pathway but also recognising the emotional toll on staff, ensuring they are supported when faced with these incredibly difficult circumstances.

‘Only by listening, learning and acting can the NHS deliver the safe, timely care that patients deserve and the working environment that staff need.’
