Our response to the BMA’s acceptance of the government’s latest offer to resident doctors
Responding to the BMA’s acceptance of the government’s latest offer to resident doctors, Sarah Woolnough, Chief Executive at The King’s Fund, said:
‘The decision by resident doctors to accept the government’s offer is a welcome step that will help avoid further disruption for patients and staff. After a prolonged period of uncertainty, this creates an opportunity to reset relationships and focus on the wider challenges facing the NHS workforce.
‘Pay is only part of the story. Burnout, workload, staff wellbeing, workplace culture and trust in government will all shape whether the NHS can retain its workforce in the years ahead. Addressing these factors will be crucial to improving both staff experience and patient care.
‘This agreement creates space to move beyond short-term dispute management towards long-term workforce reform. Given the current political instability, it is important that the government proceeds with delivering the 10 Year Workforce Plan to provide a roadmap to tackle the root causes of dissatisfaction and put the NHS on a more sustainable footing.'
