Moving towards better value health and care: productivity, people and communities
Our health and care system is in crisis and undergoing major reform to reduce the risk of becoming financially and operationally unsustainable. The intense focus on the forthcoming transformation agenda for health in 2025, with the government radically reshaping how the NHS is nationally led and managed brings to light some important considerations for how further reforms will be implemented, and crucially: how will they finish? What does productivity mean in relation to quality? How do we measure and celebrate performance? How important are people and communities in enhancing productivity and performance? Answering these questions, and in turn creating better value for money by using resources well in our health care system, will be essential.
To date, the consensus is that there is no one reason or factor behind the drop in productivity in the health and care sector in recent years, and there is no standard for how productivity is measured in primary and community care. The conversation therefore needs to be broadened to include more yardsticks by which productivity can be measured, such as the efficient and effective use of resources and budgets. There also needs to be the means to measure and capture value-based performance that supports the need for transformational shifts in how health and care services are planned, delivered and accessed. Underpinning this will be an approach that emphasises collaboration between people, communities, services and the broader health and care system. Ultimately, we have to stop trying to design the ‘perfect’ health care system and instead try to maximise the opportunities of the one we have. In other words, we must move towards better value health and care.
Join colleagues from the NHS, central and local government, private and third-sector organisations, those with lived experience and those spanning all corners of the health and care landscape as we engage in these conversations. We’ll be exploring solutions and proactive measures that the health and care system can adopt and amalgamate to create better value health care. These forward-thinking sessions will explore how organisations can better support frameworks to enable policy-makers, those working in health and care, and those who use health and care services to collaborate, work and think differently to improve outcomes.
Topics covered will include:
how and why creating better value health care is a must have, not a nice to have
positioning the productivity debate within the current political and economic climate
positively rebranding the productivity narrative to enhance engagement
learning from global health care systems
the role of diverse partnerships in driving productivity, quality and value, recognising the unique contributions of each partner
capturing and measuring value across the health and care system
a future-focused outlook on productivity, performance and value in health care.
