Communities often have the closest connection to people’s lives. If services aim to improve the health and wellbeing of their local people, they must realise the power of community-led and person-centred approaches.
Communities and the places people live in profoundly shape how healthy and well they are, often having greater influence on health and wellbeing than health services. The impact of voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) groups on people’s health and wellbeing have been brought into sharp focus by their ongoing role in responses to the cost-of-living crisis and the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, when communities are not funded properly, not listened to by local services, and groups of people are continually marginalised, it can lead to devastating consequences, such as the Grenfell tragedy. In a health and care system under pressure, if integrated care systems (ICSs) truly want to reduce health inequalities and improve the health and wellbeing of their local populations, they must invest in communities and develop better partnership-working between VCSE, NHS, and local authority organisations.
