We spoke to Amy Edmondson, Novartis Professor of Leadership and Management at the Harvard Business School, about the importance of teaming in health and care.

Amy defined teaming as teamwork on the fly. She emphasised the importance of being able to coordinate across knowledge boundaries when stable team structures aren't possible. In order to do this well, teams must not lose sight of their shared purpose and the need to embrace diverse perspectives. 

Effective teaming consists of 'hardware' and 'software'. Hardware is about clarity around the coordination that needs to happen to reach shared goals. Software is about having a shared purpose, empathy and a shared sense of psychological safety.
