Mark Newbold

Chief Executive, Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust

Mark was a histopathologist for more than 20 years, leaving medicine to take up a CEO role in 2007. He was trained and retains an interest in gastrointestinal disease, leading the preparatory work on the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.

He now runs the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust, a large trust in the Birmingham area that incorporates three hospitals and a range of community services. He chairs the NHS Confederation Hospitals Forum and is Honorary Senior Fellow at the Health Services Management Centre at the University of Birmingham. He is a governor of Aston University and Waverley School, and remains a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists.

He has a strong interest in both the future of hospital services and in leadership, particularly clinical leadership. He holds the view that NHS leaders need to be more visible and open in their decision making and is fascinated by the role of social media in facilitating this.

Mark is a guest blogger for our Time to Think Differently programme.
