Gender pay gap report

Gender pay gap reporting

At The King’s Fund, we are committed to transparency and inclusion. Although we are not legally required to report on our gender pay gap due to our size (fewer than 250 employees), we voluntarily publish this data to better understand how our recruitment, reward, and progression practices impact gender equity.

What is the gender pay gap?

The gender pay gap measures the difference in average pay between men and women across an organisation. It is not the same as equal pay, which compares pay for the same or similar roles.

Our 2023 snapshot

As of 5 April 2023, our workforce was 69% female and 31% male. Women outnumbered men in the lower three pay quartiles, while the upper quartile was evenly split (51.4% women, 48.6% men).

  • Mean gender pay gap: 17.7%

  • Median gender pay gap: 23.4%

These figures indicate that, on average, men earn more than women at the Fund.

Key insights

The gap is influenced by a higher concentration of men in senior roles, particularly in the L&OD and PEP directorates. Long tenure and progression to the top of pay bands also contribute. While women are well represented in the upper quartile overall, men are underrepresented in the lower three quartiles, which also affects the average.

We also see a wider gap in older age groups, where men are more likely to hold senior, higher-paid positions.

Our response

We recognise that addressing the gender pay gap requires sustained effort. We are taking steps to improve equity, including:

  1. Inclusive recruitment: exploring improvements to our hiring practices with a dedicated working group.

  2. Hybrid working: supporting better work-life balance, often cited as a barrier to progression for women

  3. Pay transparency: with a new Director of HR, we are renewing our focus on equal pay and reward structures.

Looking ahead

We will continue to monitor pay trends annually and publish detailed reports every five years or in line with strategic updates. Our goal is to foster a diverse and inclusive workplace where everyone has equal opportunity to thrive.
