Aims and outcomes

The aim of the project was to redesign the entrance and main social space of this 27-bed unit to ensure that service users with dementia, their families and staff felt safe, confident and valued.

Overgrown planting has been cut back and the pathway and entrance to the unit have been redesigned to provide a more open and welcoming first impression.

The reception area has been remodelled to provide an open desk, comfortable seating and views through to the garden and main social spaces.

The large day area has been refurnished with groups of chairs and a fireplace with faux fire added. This has provided a focus to the room and become a favourite seating space. An additional room has been furnished for family visits or for use when service users would prefer to sit on their own.

Glass has been used extensively to maximise light and the central rotunda, with bench seating and LED lighting, has also become a favourite place to sit.
