Aims and outcomes
The aim of the project was to encourage greater use of dining, social and garden areas in this assessment ward. Analysis of the environment showed that there were multiple decision points for patients when moving from room to room in the ward.
The wall between the dining and day rooms has been removed creating an open area which has eased access for patients who can now walk freely between the spaces which can be separated when required by a soundproofed folding door. A flexible lighting scheme has been introduced so that light levels can be varied during the day and a variety of artworks in glass and mosaic provide interest.
The adjoining garden has been redesigned with white rendered walls to reflect the light, small seating areas set into alcoves and colourful sails to provide shelter.
Patients and carers were fully involved in choosing the new colour schemes and furnishings and are now actively growing plants for the garden.
