Professor Buchan is a Professor at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh.

He has more than 25 years' experience of policy research on health sector human resources, specialising in national level strategy, policy and planning. His background includes periods as a senior human resources manager in the NHS in Scotland, a senior policy analyst at the Royal College of Nursing (UK) and as a specialist in human resources for health at the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Geneva.

James Buchan is a guest blogger for our Time to Think Differently programme. He is also an Associate at the WHO European Observatory on Health Systems, and an adjunct professor at the University of Technology, Sydney, Australia. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the European Health Management Association (EHMA) and Editor in Chief of the Human Resources for Health journal.
