In this written submission to the House of Commons Health and Social Care Select Committee, we provide an overview of the resilience of the NHS and social care workforce, including the impact of Covid-19.

In October 2020, The King’s Fund and UCL Institute of Health Equity submitted a paper to NHS England and NHS Improvement highlighting the limitations in both the coverage and quality of ethnicity recording of people using NHS health and care services in England and suggesting how this can be improved.

Our submission highlights some of the key pressures and challenges the social care sector is facing and sets out some reforms the government could make to address these issues.

The urgent action needed to stabilise general practice, by addressing workload and workforce issues, raises important questions around the timing, implementation and pace of these new service specifications even though the overall direction they set out is the right one.

We find that the draft strategy is a good start, but we believe as it is finalised its commitments need to be more tightly focused on inequality reduction than they currently are.

Ahead of debates on the address on Wednesday 28 June in the House of Commons and Thursday 29 June in the House of Lords, The King's Fund has produced this written briefing on the key issues for health and social care in the new parliament.
