Developing people, improving care: a national improvement and leadership framework for the NHS

This content relates to the following topics:

A national framework for action on improvement and leadership development in NHS-funded services was published by NHS Improvement in December 2016, sponsored by key national organisations with NHS responsibilities.

It aims to guide local, regional and national action on developing NHS staff, to equip and encourage them to work towards improving local health and care systems while having pride and joy in their work. To that end, the framework presents a critical set of improvement and leadership capabilities for staff, including:

  • systems leadership skills for those managing the integration of local health and care systems
  • quality improvement skills for staff at all levels
  • compassionate, inclusive leadership skills for leaders at all levels
  • talent management to fill senior and leadership vacancies appropriately.
