Part of Enhancing the Healing Environment

Date started: 1 Nov 2003
Organisation: mental health
Service: mental health
Project: gardens

Location

Villa Ward, which provides adult inpatient acute mental health facilities at the Princess Royal Hospital

Aims and outcomes

The aim of the project was to transform a car park area outside of the ward into an outside space for clients and to create a family-friendly, multi-purpose dining room.

In the new 'First Impressions' garden area, planting was selected to provide interest and some screening while still allowing for observation. A series of different seating areas were created, including a small covered area.

The new dining room features facilities for making drinks, a children's corner and a plasma screen for watching films and major events. A local artist worked with service users to create two large paintings of the South Downs.
