Central garden area at the Beachcroft Unit, Mile End Hospital
Aims and outcomes
The existing garden provided little privacy or interest for the elderly patients at Mile End Hospital. The project team wanted to introduce artworks and a performance area to make better use of the space.
The redesigned garden incorporates a gazebo, new planting and garden furniture, and a larger pond. Patients were involved in developing design features such as the gazebo, and staff were also involved in the design process. Occupational therapists, for example, were involved in designing a bench that allows people in wheelchairs to pot plants.
