Part of Enhancing the Healing Environment

Date started: 1 Oct 2001
Organisation: acute
Service: adult acute
Project: social spaces, wards

Location

The Lewis Lloyd ward in the care of the elderly department at St Mary's Hospital.

This is now part of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

Aims and outcomes

In undertaking the project, the team wanted to make a positive impact in a part of the hospital environment that did not usually get much attention. The aim was to create a space within the ward that could be used for socialising and rehabilitation.

A specially-commissioned stained glass window, designed to reflect the hospital's heritage, was installed. The window, which uses bright, uplifting colours, creates a focal point for the social area and is also used by patients during reminiscence therapy.
