Reception area and communal space in the Phoneix inpatient ward at Littlemore Mental Health Centre

Aims and outcomes

Originally known as Oxfordshire Mental Healthcare NHS Trust.

The aim of the project was to refurbish the ward's reception area and to rethink the layout of the communal area. By improving the environment within the ward, the team hoped to help service users and staff engage with one another more effectively.

A new bespoke reception desk has been designed to be accessible to all by offering various desk heights and new windows and lighting have improved the lighting in the main seating area.

A small 'one-to-one' room was created by replacing the ward kitchen with a small kitchen/bar area within the communal space, providing a place for service users and staff to meet privately. The reception area is now bright and welcoming, and features a stained glass window created by a former service user.
