Part of Enhancing the Healing Environment

Date started: 1 Apr 2008
Organisation: acute
Service: adult acute, end-of-life care
Project: bereavement areas

Project location

Frenchay Hospital and Southmead Hospital

Aims and Outcomes

This project included major refurbishments to the mortuaries on the trust’s two hospital sites. Entrance to both viewing areas is now through private gardens and each provides a waiting room, with tea/coffee making facilities, a DDA compliant toilet as well as the viewing room. At Frenchay the viewing room has double doors to the surrounding garden whilst at Southmead a small area at the front of the mortuary has been fenced off to provide a dedicated outside space.

A similar interior design scheme was chosen for both sites with a naturalistic theme of wildlife and flowers in a blue and green colour palette. Non-institutional furniture and fittings were purchased; bespoke textile covers made for each of the biers and glass film has been used effectively both on screen windows and doors.

At the suggestion of relatives, cards are provided for relatives to leave a message with the deceased if they wish.
