Part of Enhancing the Healing Environment

Date started: 1 Jun 2001
Organisation: acute
Service: adult acute
Project: gardens

A courtyard within the main building at Newham General Hospital.

This is now part of Bart's Health NHS Trust.

Aims and outcomes

The aim of the project was to create a healing garden with an emphasis on natural textures and planting, to stimulate the senses of sight, hearing and smell. The team wanted to provide a place of respite, reflection and healing for patients of all cultures and conditions, so it was important for the environment to be relaxing and harmonious.

They were also interested in using the environment to stimulate interest in the arts as a therapeutic tool, for example, using the garden as an intimate performance space. A previously underused courtyard is now a healing garden with quiet spaces, scented herbs and water features.
