Date started: 1 Apr 2008
Organisation: acute
Service: adult acute, end-of-life care
Project: wards

Project location

Liverpool Women's Hospital

Aims and Outcomes

The trust serves a large geographical area and the aim of the Mulberry Suite was to provide a home away from home for those receiving palliative care and their relatives.

A discrete area off the main ward was chosen as a suitable project site and the interior design of the suite was influenced by the photographs of Lupin fields that had been taken by a former patient.

A small private lobby area leads to the main bedroom with a specially sourced bed and bed linen and comfortable seating for visitors. Bedside controls have been provided for lighting, including the window blinds; temperature control; TV and internet access. The adjacent bespoke en suite contributes to the high quality non institutional environment.

The relatives' space which opens off the lobby provides privacy where they may take time out, relax, and make themselves a snack or drink and to freshen up.
