Part of Enhancing the Healing Environment

Date started: 1 May 2002
Organisation: mental health
Service: mental health
Project: gardens, social spaces

Location

Oaktree Ward, Woodlands Centre, a mental health unit for older patients

Aims and outcomes

The project aimed to make better use of space within an admission assessment ward. The team wanted to create an improved environment for patients by redesigning the patient lounge and providing direct access from the lounge to the internal courtyard area.

The redevelopment involved removing a circular corridor that was used only by smokers, creating a new smoking room and an activity room, and introducing a semi-private seating area in the courtyard.
