Date started: 1 Dec 2005
Organisation: learning disabilities
Service: learning disabilities
Project: gardens

Project location

Bradbury House, Coventry

Aims and Outcomes

Bradbury House provides respite care for children and young people from five to 19 with learning disabilities and behavioural difficulties. Although the unit was purpose-built, there were insufficient funds at the time for the garden to be developed and this became the EHE project focus.

The children were involved from the outset in helping to develop the design, joining the team on trips to play areas so that they could evaluate the equipment prior to purchase, attending art and craft workshops and helping with fundraising.

The garden now has something for everyone. The bright colours chosen for the rubberised surface create an inviting and vibrant feel, even in poor weather. A wide range of robust equipment has been installed and all the planting carefully chosen to be non-toxic. Within a couple of weeks of the garden opening, staff began to notice positive changes in the children and there has been a significant reduction of incidents of challenging behaviour.
