Part of Enhancing the Healing Environment

Date started: 1 Apr 2008
Organisation: acute
Service: adult acute, end-of-life care
Project: A&E, bereavement areas

Project location

Addenbrookes Hospital

Aims and Outcomes

This project has improved the relatives' room in the emergency department and the rooms used for the registrar, bereavement and counselling services in the hospital.

Space was found to create a dedicated central bereavement suite, including space for the registrar, and a counselling room near the main entrance. The design has maximised the tight space available and provides a seating area and two rooms. A modern colour palette and furnishings together with the curved walls give a sense of welcome which is enhanced by the lighting scheme, banquette seating and bespoke sculpture. The design has been linked through all the rooms with a signature image etched on glass.

The relatives' room in the emergency department has been redecorated in warm natural colours with comfortable furnishings made from natural materials where possible. A coffee/tea machine has been provided and the project's signature image is etched on the glass used for the internal windows.
