More action on safety - The King's Fund responds to Healthcare Commission report on the state of health care

Responding to today's report by the Healthcare Commission, State of Healthcare 2006, The King's Fund chief executive Niall Dickson said:

'We welcome the emphasis on safety in today's report by the Healthcare Commission. Patients need confidence when choosing to seek care from both the independent sector and the NHS and it is good to note that standards of safety and quality are broadly comparable between the two sectors.

'However, it is still alarming that a substantial minority of independent sector establishments and NHS trusts are not meeting some core standards - clearly there is much more work to be done here.

'What matters now is how this information is used. There needs to be more action on making services safer for patients in both the NHS and the independent sector. This needs to be done by raising the overall standard of care and, more importantly, by getting rid of unacceptable standards.'
