Part of Commission on the Future of Health and Social Care in England

Stephen Dorrell, chair of the Health Select Committee, spoke of the imperative to achieve truly integrated care, which involves redefining 'health and social care' as a service that is experienced by patients as a single care system, and of the important role technology will play in reshaping health and social care services.

This item was recorded at the breakfast event to launch the new Commission on the Future of Health and Social Care in England, in June 2013.

My experience of the last year running a CCG, together with my clinical background, bring me to a position where I have a conviction that we should transform Continuing Health Care. I am aware that this is not a popular area to tackle, given the legal challenge involved and the political sensitivities but we would be remis not to do so at a time when health and social care boundaries are blurring and indeed, hopefully vanishing. Having spoken to Geoff Alltimes, I would be extremely keen to share with the Commisison my ideas about how CHC could practically be changed, with improvements in patient experience as well as hugely reducing waste of public funds, thereby saving some of the billions we need to find to fund care in the future. Please may I contribute to the programme? Dr Sue Crossman
