Dr Louise Restrick, consultant respiratory physician, explains more about Whittington respiratory service, which provides acute services and community health services to a population of approximately 460,000 people in Haringey and Islington CCGs.
The service comprises a specialist outpatient respiratory clinic based at Whittington Hospital, a 21-bed acute inpatient ward including a 4-bed high-dependency unit, and the Whittington Integrated Community Respiratory (CORE) team, which supports patients in their homes following discharge from hospital or referral from GPs.
The respiratory department provides a number other services in hospital and in the community, working across pathways of care. These include: post-discharge support for patients following an admission to hospital, ongoing case management for vulnerable patients, exercise classes, and a stop smoking service
The biggest challenge in setting up the service has been how to align commissioning incentives with patient priorities and clinical incentives.
