Karen has a background of working in the NHS, where she occupied a number of senior management posts across acute and specialist services before moving into management and leadership development. From 2000 to 2003 she was National Director for NHS Management Training Schemes, then in 2004 she took over the responsibility for programmes for chief executives, directors and boards run by the NHS Leadership Centre and NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement. In this latter role she also had responsibility for developing leadership programmes around policy reform and working with colleagues in other health systems to support reform in leadership development.

Karen's role at The King's Fund is to provide strategic direction for the Leadership Development team and to support the development of new leadership interventions, working in partnership with the NHS and other significant providers.
