Getting the Right Medicines?

Putting public interests at the heart of health-related research
The NHS has always had a close relationship with the pharmaceutical industry. Economically, this partnership has been very successful, but at times the industry's drive to make profits has conflicted with the best interests of the public.

This publication argues that, in focusing on new medicinal drugs, the partnership is neglecting other areas of research that may help promote health.

It proposes changes to ensure sufficient incentives for tackling neglected areas, sets out an agenda for negotiating future arrangements between the industry and the government, and points towards a more transparent process, with an emphasis on user involvement.
