Building Bridges for Health

Exploring the potential for advocacy in London
Baljinder Heer
There is increasing awareness that spokespeople have an important role to play in helping community members to get their views heard, secure their rights, and obtain the health services and information they need.

The government is showing increasing commitment to advocacy as a means of reducing inequality, but policy has developed in an ad hoc manner – as has advocacy provision itself.

This paper sets out to explore the scope of advocacy in London, asks what challenges the sector is facing, and recommends ways forward.

It includes an extensive literature review, in-depth interviews with advocates, and analysis of government policy affecting the sector.
