Evidence submission: Health Select Committee's inquiry into public expenditure on health and social care

The King's Fund's written response to the Health Select Committee's inquiry into public expenditure on health and social care.

This submission considers the financial pressures the NHS is currently under and will continue to face in the coming years. It analyses the progress being made in the attempt to meet the Nicholson Challenge target of making £20 billion of savings.

Progress continues to be slow in implementing reconfigurations which are essential to improve quality and have the potential to make financial savings.

With the challenges of the forthcoming winter and a growing number of providers struggling to meet accident and emergency waiting time targets, it is looking increasingly possible that the Nicholson Challenge will not be met.
