Day twenty-three: Born on Christmas Day

In 2011 1,454 babies were born on Christmas Day. This year, a baby girl born on the 25 December will have a life expectancy of 82.8 years, while a baby boy will have a life expectancy of 79 years. Compare this to 1948 – at the birth of the NHS – when a baby girl’s life expectancy was 71 years and a baby boy's was 66 years. These changes in demography are examined in our work on the future of health and social care.
