Day thirteen: Fuel poverty and public health

The rising cost of energy bills means that more people are being affected by fuel poverty, with 11 per cent of households in England being considered 'fuel poor' in 2011. Cold homes are a contributor to excess winter mortality and increase the risk of cardiovascular, respiratory and rheumatoid diseases as well as hypothermia and poorer mental health.
