EHE Tool Box

Following numerous requests from Network members for additional resources to help involve and inspire their colleagues to take an EHE approach to capital schemes and refurbishments, we are delighted to let you know that an EHE Tool Box is now available from The King’s Fund.

Through the EHE programme, over 230 teams from hospitals, hospices and HM prisons have delivered a wide range of extraordinary transformations to the physical environment in which care is delivered. These projects have not only improved the patient experience but have also enabled significant and cost effective service change.

Critical to the success of the EHE methodology is the involvement of multidisciplinary teams in planning and delivering projects in partnership with patients, service users, carers and staff. The Tool Box has been specifically developed to include resources, materials and exercises that have been developed through the EHE programme and have been proven to engage and motivate key stakeholders to think differently about how the physical care environment can be improved for patients and staff.

Developed as a very practical resource with full instructions, the Tool Box will also increase awareness of the importance of light, colour and art in the care environment and offers a range of before and after photographs of completed schemes.

Tool Box resources

The Tool Box contains all that is needed to set up and run two separate workshops for key stakeholders and contains suffi cient resources to facilitate several workshop sessions:

Workshop 1 includes an introduction to what makes a healing environment.

Workshop 2 includes how to brief estates colleagues, designers or architects and incorporates a design challenge.

Both sessions will be relevant to those working on smaller refurbishments and larger capital schemes including new builds.

Resources include:

  • audiovisual materials
  • Presentations
  • guided practical exercises
  • before and after pictures of completed EHE projects
  • comprehensive notes and guidance for facilitators
  • materials for the exercises in both workshops

Field trials of the Tool Box indicate that it is important for the facilitator running the workshops to have background knowledge of EHE principles, although they do not need to have any formal training experience. As a result the Box is currently only available to EHE Network Members.
