Aims and outcomes
The aim of the project was to improve the environment in the acute elderly care medical ward to make it more suitable for the care of people with cognitive problems and dementia.
The ward is of standard nucleus design with no day room and a key aim was to remove the large nurses' station to create a new reception desk and calm seating area for patients at the centre of the ward. New lighting and flooring and a bold colour scheme have transformed the space and people can now enjoy looking at a series of local postcards or have a snack.
New signage and accent colours in each of the bed bays has made it easier for service users to find their way, which now also has a small area with comfortable seating away from the bedside.
As part of the scheme, as series of large patchwork artworks decorate the ward corridor and improvements were also made to bath, shower and toilet facilities while handrails have been made more visible.
