Aims and Outcomes

The team wanted to create a welcoming, reassuring first impression for their older age patients and visitors. The orientation of the reception desk was confusing and the main corridor sloped down to the wards while the entrance doors to the wards were not well lit. Yellow radiators obscured the view to the gardens from the corridor.

The reception desk has been re-orientated so that the staff can now see people approaching the entrance. New lighting has been installed throughout, with special emphasis placed on lighting the ward entrances, while the flooring chosen for the scheme incorporates age-appropriate signage.

A semi-screened seating area is now provided at the top of the corridor. A soft and gentle colour scheme of greens and yellows was chosen, which is reflected in the leaves on the surrounding glass partition and the windows to the adjoining day hospital.
