Location

Courtyard garden between the main reception and outpatients department on the Royal Brompton Hospital Fulham Road site

Aims and outcomes

The aim of the project was to transform an underused space into a courtyard garden, which would be a 'breathing space' for patients, visitors and staff. The courtyard was overlooked by the respiratory unit, so it needed to be attractive when viewed from above as well as from ground level.

The team wanted the design to reflect the location and history of the site and to stimulate the senses. The garden is easy to maintain, and the use of terracotta pots helps the garden blend in with the hospital building.
