Aims and overview

The aim of the project was to redesign the dark and underused dining room and kitchen at Meadowfields to make a flexible social space that could be used not only for meals but also for activities including cooking.

The area was dominated by noisy, cook chill trolleys – these now have a dedicated area in the enlarged kitchen which has been designed so that patients are now able to cook as part of their occupational therapy sessions.

The dining room has been redesigned with a new lighting scheme, integral cupboards, TV and large photographs and images of York which have also been used on the windows to screen the adjoining car park. New, bright, crockery has been purchased and a drinks machine installed together with some comfortable chairs for visitors.

The unit corridors and bedrooms have been painted using accent colours and are hung with large photograph of local scenes to aid orientation.
