Aims and Outcomes

The dementia care assessment service had recently been re-located to a more modern unit on the hospital site and the aim of the project was to create an accessible and safe garden for patients in the courtyard adjoining the ward.

The garden has been specifically designed, with the help of patients and carers, to provide good, even, paths for walking around raised circular beds. Planting has been chosen to provide year round interest and one section has been devoted to a small allotment where patients can plant and grow fruit and vegetables. An area for activities and performances has been created. The garden is lit at night and a water feature provides calming sound.

Patients have direct access to the garden from the ward lounge areas which each give onto a paved seating area. There is a variety of seating throughout the space, with gazebos offering protection from sun and rain, together with poems and artworks to enjoy.
