Project location

Waiting area of the x-ray department at Mayday University Hospital.

This is now part of Croydon Health Services NHS Trust.

Aims and outcomes

The project team wanted to redesign the waiting area of the x-ray department to recreate the feeling of a hotel and health spa, and 'bring the Mediterranean to Croydon'.

A Portakabin housed within an unattractive and uncared-for courtyard was replaced with a light and welcoming conservatory waiting room, and the courtyard was transformed into a Roman-style garden. A glass screen was removed to make the reception area feel more open and welcoming.

Screened areas give privacy for inpatients and more accessibility for wheelchair users, and a plasma digital projector displays films of a therapeutic nature and local interest.
