Gwendolyn Ward, The Evington Centre, Leicester
Aims and outcomes
The aim of this project was to create a palliative care suite for patients with dementia, with a private garden and space for relatives.
Two rooms and a bathroom at the end of the ward were identified for the self contained suite. The redesign has created an en suite bedroom with French windows to allow bed and wheelchair access to a small private garden, and an area for relatives. Furniture and furnishings throughout have been specially sourced to be both clinically appropriate and as non institutional as possible.
The relatives' area has a small kitchenette and a comfortable reclining chair in case they wish to take a rest. Accent colours, soft furnishings and artworks depicting local scenes provide internal decoration while patients can see the commissioned glass artwork in the garden from their beds. The garden has been designed to provide year round interest with raised boarders and covered areas providing shelter from sun and rain.
