Aims and Outcomes
The in-patient unit has four single-storey wards, a central core area and garden. The core area links the wards and provides the main social space, but this large dark somewhat intimidating space was being mainly used as a thoroughfare.
The aim of the project was to transform the area into a safe environment which would be welcoming, comfortable and of therapeutic benefit. Low level, curved and undulating dividing walls now delineate the comfortable seating area from the main thoroughfare between the bungalows. Large fabric kites have been hung on the wooden ceiling, reducing noise levels, but also making the area feel less intimidating. Planters link the internal and external areas and the courtyard garden space has been maximised. It now provides a peaceful area for enjoying the sound of the central water feature and the range of planting in the surrounding raised beds.
