Project location
The Mount, Hyde Terrace, Leeds
Aims and Outcomes
Although a recent PFI build; the unit, one of eight perinatal units in England, did not provide good social space for the inpatient mothers.
A key aim of the project was to make the dining area more usable as it felt dark, institutional and uninviting. Two distinct spaces have been created divided by a movable floor-to-ceiling screen: one next to the servery for eating, and the other a more relaxed seating area with comfortable chairs. A new conservatory has been erected adjoining the dining room and the garden beyond has been given new lighter paving and planting.
One of the nurseries has been transformed into a quiet room and has its own direct access to the garden. Simply furnished the room is both intimate and comfortable.
