Aims and outcomes

The project at Epsom and St Helier NHS Trust was undertaken as part of the A&E modernisation programme. The aims of the project were to create a calm, comfortable, relaxed and uplifting environment that would help reduce incidences of violence and vandalism within the A&E department.

The team wanted to ensure that patients and visitors received a good impression on arrival and throughout their time in the department. They also wanted to remove perceived and physical barriers between staff and patients at reception.

The refurbishment saw the unit enhanced with bright colours and artwork throughout the children's area, coloured doors to help people find their way around the department, and an attractive wall of coloured glass in the reception area.
